Shane Shahrestani (PhD '21), an alumnus of the Andrew and Peggy Cherng Department of Medical Engineering, has been named to the 2025 Forbes "30 Under 30 in Science" list. Shahrestani, along with Alexander Ballatori, is recognized as a co-founder of StrokeDx, a company that develops portable imaging devices capable of determining stroke types in patients within minutes.
When someone collapses unexpectedly, a stroke may be the cause, but diagnosing the correct type of stroke quickly is critical and challenging. The traditional process involves transporting the patient to a hospital, conducting neuroimaging, and interpreting the results—delays that can jeopardize brain cells due to oxygen deprivation. Shahrestani and Ballatori developed StrokeDx to address this problem by accelerating the diagnosis process, enabling faster treatment and improving patient outcomes.
In March 2023, Shahrestani was previously featured as a Caltech EAS "Trailblazer of Medical Engineering" for his work with StrokeDx.
